Decatur's Woes Continue with 35-7 Loss

BERLIN- Stephen Decatur's varsity football team fell to visiting Kent Island, 35-7, last week, continuing a tough stretch against Bayside North powerhouses while falling to 1-4 on the season.

When the 2010 schedule came out, the Seahawks likely knew their season would be defined by a three-game stretch against traditional Bayside North division opponents in late September and early October, and thus far the worst case scenario has played out. The Seahawks fell to Kent Island, 35-7, last Friday after getting beat by Queen Annes, 35-0, and North Caroline, 52-24.

Decatur started well on defense last Friday, stopping Kent Island on the Buccaneers' first possession, but that was as good as it would get for the Seahawks. After stopping Decatur on three plays, Kent Island went on a methodical drive from midfield that included 12 plays and took over five minutes off the clock. The Buccaneers then punched it on a nine-yard touchdown run to take an early lead.

On the next Decatur possession, Decatur faced a third down play when quarterback Tyler Hartrim went back to pass. Hartrim was blitzed on the play and sacked, and was called for intentional grounding. To add injury to insult, Hartrim hurt his leg on the play and did not return in the game, severely limiting what the Seahawks could do on offense.

Kent Island added a 22-yard scoring run and a one-year touchdown dive just before the half to take a 21-0 lead into intermission. The lone bright spot for Decatur in the second half was a 75-yard touchdown run by D.J. Kee about halfway through the fourth, ending a scoring drought that went back nearly eight quarters. Kee finished with 137 yard rushing on 14 carries in the game.
