Up and Down Week for Seahawks

BERLIN- It was an up and down week for Stephen Decatur’s boys’ varsity basketball team against a pair of Worcester County rivals, with the Seahawks beating Snow Hill on Monday, 59-46, before falling to Pocomoke, 42-33, in a low scoring game on the road on Tuesday.

After competing in the Governor’s Challenge in Salisbury during the holiday break, the Seahawks hit the ground running when schools reopened this week with a pair of games against Snow Hill and Pocomoke on back-to-back days. The second half of the season got off to a good start on Monday as the Seahawks beat county rival Snow Hill, 59-46.

Several Decatur got into the box score including Drakar Purnell, who led the Seahawks with 13 points in the win over the Eagles. Matt Swistak, Tre Foreman and Jesse Engle each pitched in nine points for Decatur. Swistak also grabbed nine rebounds and blocked five shots for Decatur in the win over Snow Hill.

On Tuesday, the Seahawks went back on the road for another game against a county rival in Pocomoke and fell to the Warriors, 42-33, in a low scoring game. Both teams shot poorly during a first half that saw nearly as many turnovers as points scored by the two teams combined. Pocomoke led by four points, 17-13, at the half for a combined 30 points, while the two teams committed 20 turnovers combined.

The Seahawks recovered somewhat from their first half malaise and went on a 9-1 run to start the third quarter. Decatur took its first lead at 19-18 about halfway through the third quarter. The two teams went back and fourth during the rest of the third quarter and most of the fourth before the Warriors started gaining the upper hand.

Pocomoke tied the game at 29-29 with just over five minutes left in the game and went on a 13-4 run of its own to close out the 42-33 win over its Worcester County rival. Decatur hits the road for a pair of games against Mardela this evening and Wicomico next Tuesday before its next home game against Washington High next Thursday, January 13.
