Seahawks to Face Familiar Foes in States

5/13/2011 | By Sports Editor, Steven Green

BERLIN- If Stephen Decatur’s boys’ varsity lacrosse team is going to make a run at a possible state championship, it’s going to have to get through some familiar foes along the way.

The Seahawks earned a number-three seed in the Class 3A-2A East region when the tournament seedings were announced on Monday. Decatur faced six-seed Bennett at home yesterday in a game played too late to be included in this edition, but if the only regular season match-up between the two Bayside South rivals is any indication, the Seahawks likely advanced to earn a much anticipated rematch with old rival Parkside in the second round tomorrow. Decatur beat Bennett, 12-4, back on April 6.

If Decatur got by Bennett yesterday, the Seahawks will face Parkside on the road tomorrow. The teams split two regular season games with the Seahawks winning, 12-6, on March 30 and the Rams gaining revenge with a 12-7 win on April 29. To add insult to injury, Parkside’s win created a tie between the two teams for the Bayside South regular season title. Parkside then won a coin toss to decide the championship and earned a trip to the conference title game.

Should the Seahawks advance past Parkside, they would likely play Bayside North champion Kent Island in the finals of the East Sectional in the 3A-2A East Region tournament. Decatur lost to Kent Island, 10-7, in their only regular season meeting with Buccaneers this year.
