Thief Escapes After Snatching Jewelry

9/23/2011 | By News Editor, Shawn J. Soper

OCEAN CITY -- Resort police this week are still looking for the suspect who robbed a Gold Coast Mall jewelry store late last Thursday, snatching roughly $50,000 worth of jewelry from the clerk who was showing it to the suspect.

Around 3:40 p.m. last Thursday, Ocean City police responded to the Liljenquist and Beckstead jewelry store in the Gold Coast Mall for a reported theft that had just occurred. About 10 minutes earlier, an unidentified black male had entered the store and a sales associate was showing the man several pieces of expensive jewelry, which had been removed from a display case.

The suspect then grabbed the jewelry from the salesperson’s hand and ran out of the store. The sales clerk attempted to pursue the suspect and was assisted by two unidentified males, but the suspect was able to get away. The approximate value of the items stolen is in the range of $40,000 to $50,000, although the exact description of the stolen items is not being disclosed.

The suspect is described as a black male, roughly 6’ to 6’3” with an average build, short black hair and brown eyes. The suspect was wearing a black suit, a dark-colored hat and a silver scarf or tie. The suspect was also wearing a dark-colored hat.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the Criminal Investigation Division General Assignment Section and Det. Carl Perry at 410-723-6604.
