BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s varsity football team won its third game in a row last weekend, pounding Easton, 41-8, on Homecoming to improve to 4-2 on the season.
One week after upsetting Queen Anne’s, 34-31, on the Lions’ homecoming game, the Seahawks had to avoid the same fate last Friday when it faced Easton on a day it welcomed back alumni with full festivities including fireworks displays. Easton had shown signs of life the week before with a 56-0 rout of Colonel Richardson, making the Warriors a somewhat scary opponent for Decatur on homecoming, but the Seahawks left nothing to chance, jumping out to a big first half lead and never looking back.
After a couple of early punts, Decatur got on the board with a 25-yard touchdown run by D.J. Kee. In the second quarter, it was Kee again, taking in a 75-yard touchdown run to increase the lead to 14-0. Kee scored again from 25 yards out just before the half to extend the Decatur lead to 21-0 at the intermission.
At halftime, Decatur quarterback Teron Tyre was named homecoming king amid a celebration including fireworks in front of the big home crowd. Early in the third, Tyre was all business as he completed a long Decatur drive with a one-yard touchdown plunge to extend the lead to 28-0.
Decatur’s Jake Rites added another Seahawk touchdown on a four-yard plunge to make the score 35-0, and junior varsity call-up Tavon Mills took it in from 10 yards out for Decatur’s final score to make it 41-0. Easton scored a late touchdown to avoid the shutout, but the domination was complete and Decatur rolled to the 41-8 homecoming win.
With the win, the Seahawks improved to 4-2 on the season and appear to be closing in on another berth in the state Class 3A-East playoffs although there is still much work to be done. Decatur faces the 1-5 Parkside Rams at home tonight, followed by another fairly easy game against 1-5 North Caroline next week at home in a rare Thursday night game. However, the Seahawks still have to face Wicomico, perhaps the best team in the Bayside Conference this year, on the road, before closing out the regular season on the road against Worcester County rival Snow Hill in the finale.
