Decatur Golfers Prep for State Semis

BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s varsity golf team will head to the University of Maryland next week to compete in the state semifinals with a chance to advance to the state championship round on the line.

Last week, the Seahawks finished second in the state quarterfinals at the Hyatt in Cambridge to qualify as a team for the state semifinal tournament at College Park next week. Decatur shot a team-low 326 at Cambridge, just two strokes behind Kent Island, which on the tournament with a 324.

Decatur’s Nikki Rafer shot a 75 in the quarterfinals, which was the lowest score in the field, male or female. Joe Iacona shot a 77, the lowest score by a male in the field. Delaney Iacona shot a personal best 85 and Andrew Urban finished with an 89. Rafer, Joe Iacona, Delaney Iacona and Urban will represent Decatur as a team in the state semifinals, while Audrey Affelder will compete as an individual.

The Class 3A-4A tournament tees off on Monday at College Park. The top 40 percent of males and top 40 percent of females will advance to the state championship tournament, which will be held next Wednesday.
