Decatur Golfers Finish Strong at States

10/28/2011 | By Shawn J. Soper, Sports Editor

BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s varsity golfers wrapped up a remarkable season with a strong showing at the state championship tournament at College Park this week.

The Seahawks sent five golfers to the Maryland State Championship Tournament at the University of Maryland this week and acquitted themselves very well against some of the top prep golfers in the state. At the quarterfinals in Cambridge last week, Decatur finished second overall with a team score of 326 to send four golfers- Nikki Rafer, Joe Iacona, Delaney Iacona and Andrew Urban to the state tournament this week as a team. A fifth Seahawk golfer, Audrey Affelder, also qualified to compete in the state tournament as an individual.

In the first round on Monday, Joe Iacona and Rafer each shot an 82 at the tough College Park course to advance to Wednesday’s finals. Urban shot a 80 and Delaney Iacona shot a 91 and each barely missed the cut to advance to Wednesday. Affelder finished with a 113. On Wednesday, Joe Iacona finished with an 80 for a total score of 162, while Rafer shot an 89 on Wednesday and finished with a 171.
