BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s boys’ varsity basketball team continued its early season up and down trend this week, falling to Bayside South rival Wicomico, 77-58, last Thursday before rebounding with a 45-27 win over Kent Island on Monday.
Decatur’s record now stands at 3-2 on the season after a continuing an early season trend of a win followed by a loss. The Seahawks beat North Dorchester, 69-55, in their season opener, then fell to Bennett, 65-55. Decatur responded with a 69-51 win over Mardela, followed by the 77-58 loss to Wicomico. On Monday, Decatur got back in the win column with a 45-27 win over Kent Island in a low-scoring game for both teams.
In the 77-58 loss to Wicomico last Thursday, Decatur’s Drakar Purnell led all scorers with 25 points. On Monday, Purnell led the Seahawks again with 18 points in the 45-27 win over Kent Island, while Josh King scored 10. The Seahawks were strong on the boards with Chase Sams and Matt LeCompte each grabbing 10 rebounds.
Decatur played county rival Pocomoke yesterday in a game played too late to be included in this edition. The Seahawks will compete in the Governor’s Challenge holiday tournament in Salisbury over the Christmas break and will hit the ground running in the second half with a home game against Crisfield on January 3.
