Junior Achievement Benefit In Worcester Funded Buckingham

BERLIN -- Junior Achievement (JA) held its first ever Adopt A School Dinner last October at the Marlin Club in West Ocean City.  The committee that put on the event, had envisioned an event to raise the necessary funding and bring community awareness for JA Programs. Not only was that vision met, it far exceeded the committee’s goal, raising almost $30,000 for programs.

Classes were held at Stephen Decatur High School where students participated in JA’s “Careers with a Purpose” and “Business Ethics” programs.

JA’s Adopt A School committee announced this week that Buckingham Elementary School was fully funded. Every single student will participate in Junior Achievement’s elementary school programs this school year.

“I was overwhelmed by the generosity of our community in helping build awareness about JA in Worcester County. We have made a strong commitment to offering financial literacy to all of our students in our county but we need the help of our community,” Christine Selzer, chair of the Adopt A School Dinner.

“I had been involved in Junior Achievement as part of a School-to-Career program I develolped when I lived in Connecticut. JA is an important program because it relates real life experiences to classroom lessons. I know first hand what it can do for a community and wanted to offer my assistance,” Anderson said.

The tremendous level of support from the Worcester County community inspired Selzer and Anderson, who have now joined forces to build JA’s Worcester County Advisory Board and a team of supporters for the JA mission.  

Junior Achievement of the Eastern Shore is a non-profit organization dedicated to educating youth, grades K-12 both public and private, on financial literacy, work readiness, and entrepreneurship. The hands on, age appropriate programs inspire youth to live within their means, prepare for the world of work and understand the free enterprise system. Programs are brought to life by local business members from the community as an enhancement to what kids learn in school and a direct link to real life applications.
