Mallards Enjoy Strong First Week

9/14/2012 | By Shawn J. Soper, Sports Editor

BERLIN- Worcester Prep’s boys’ varsity soccer team got the 2012 season off to a fast start, beating Holly Grove, 4-1, in the season opener last week before routing Greenwood Mennonite, 6-1, at home on Monday.

After a scoreless first half against Holly Grove in the season opener last Wednesday, the Mallards got the offense cranked up, scoring three goals in a span of five minutes to settle the issue. Seth Conboy scored on a nice assist from Ryan Nally to take a 1-0 lead. A short time later, Conboy assisted Nally to push the lead to 2-0. J.B Loomis finished off the big run with goal to make it 3-0 with just eight minutes gone in the second half. Holly Grove scored at the 14-minute mark in the second half to cut the lead to 3-1, but Nally added a goal with eight minutes remaining to complete the 4-1 victory.

On Monday, Worcester already led Greenwood Mennonite, 2-0, with eight minutes remaining in the first half before reeling off a four-goal run that spanned the rest of the first half and the beginning of the second half. With 3:13 remaining in the first half, Worcester’s Christopher Klug fired a shot from the perimeter into the upper right corner to push the Mallards’ lead to 3-0.

Less than a minute later, Lucas Payne got behind the last line of Greenwood Mennonite’s defense to set up a one-on-one with the keeper and popped a floater of the goalie’s head to push the lead to 4-0, which is how the first half would end. In the second half, Nally scored on an indirect penalty kick in the box to extend Worcester’s lead to 5-0. Alec Zarif scored less than a minute later on a nice shot off a perfect feed in traffic to round out Worcester’s scoring at 6-0. Greenwood got on the board with goal with just over 11 minutes left in the game, which ended 6-1.
