Buxy’s Looks to Defend Flag Title

OCEAN CITY- The Ocean City Recreation and Parks Fall Flag Football League got underway last weekend with defending champion Buxy’s Salty Dog looking to defend it title for the third straight year.

This year marks the sixth season for the league as an officially sanctioned Recreation and Parks Department activity, although an official flag football league has gone on in the resort each fall for years. Typically, three games are played each Monday night at Northside Park prior to the NFL’s “Monday Night Football” and the games are usually over in time for the participants to get to their favorite watering holes by kick-off.

While the rules are set up to limit physical contact, the league has produced its share of bitter rivalries in recent years with a handful of local bars and restaurants vying for bragging rights. Buxy’s Salty Dog has won the championship in each of the last three years after some bitter battles with rivals Kirby’s Pub and Tequila Mockingbird, for example.

“Last year was a close race between Buxy’s, Kirby’s and Tequila, but in the end, Buxy’s pulled through for the third year as champion,” said program organizer Ron Strickler.
