Jack Leroy Babcock

BERLIN – Jack Leroy Babcock, age 78, died on Monday, December 17, 2007. Born in Rice Lake, Wis. he was the son of the late George Babcock. He is survived by his mother, Alyce Phillipson Bacock of Rice Lake, Wis.; two sons, Stephen L. Babcock and his wife Yvonne of Berlin and Thomas A. Babcock and his wife Joy of Salisbury; two grandchildren, Michael Babcock and Derrick Babcock; and four nieces.

Babcock was a member of Buckingham Presbyterian Church. He moved to Berlin in 1963 to start Eastern Animal Foods for the Ross Wells Company. In 1971, he built the Tastee Freeze, also known as Boomers, and was the owner/operator.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, Dec. 22 at 11 a.m. at the Burbage Funeral Home in Berlin where friends may call from 10-11 a.m. The Rev. Gary Baer will officiate. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Worcester County Humane Society, PO Box 48, Berlin, Md. 21811 or Buckingham Presbyterian Church, 20 S. Main St., Berlin, Md. 21811.

Arrangements are by the Burbage Funeral Home in Berlin.

Sophia Frances Klein

BERLIN – Sophia Frances Klein, who was a wife and mother, passed away on Dec. 16, 2007.

She was born in Altoona, Pa. on Jan. 5, 1923. Her father, Mark Cecula, and mother, Victoria Cecula, lived for the most of their lives in Altoona. She moved to Washington, DC in the early 1940’s where she was employed with the Hecht Co. and the IRS for several years.

In 1946, she married her husband William N. Klein and they eventually moved to Greenbelt, Md. She had three daughters, Barbara Ward (Earl) of Riverdale, Md., Shirley Klein of Fredericksburg, Va., and Victoria Kline of Woodbine, Md. She also 3 grandchildren, Sean and Lisa Harper and Andrea Landauer, and three great grandchildren, William and Jack Landauer and Gavin Harper.

She was an active member of the St. Hugh’s Catholic Church and Elementary School. She was also an ardent outdoor enthusiast, taking great care of her flower gardens and yard. She was lovingly called "the pansy lady" by her friends.

She and her husband moved to Ocean Pines in 1978, where she was also an active member of the Ocean Pines Women’s and Garden Clubs.

Her husband, William, of 61 years of marriage, will continue to reside in Ocean Pines.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. John Neumann Catholic Church on Friday, Dec. 21 at 1 p.m., where friends may call from noon-1 p.m. Interment will be private. Arrangements are by the Burbage Funeral Home in Berlin

Beulah W. Cone

BERLIN – Beulah W. Cone, age 89, died Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2007 at Atlantic General Hospital in Berlin.

Born in Taylorville, she was the daughter of the late Lorenzo Wooten and Mary Elizabeth Clark Wooten. She was preceded in death by her husbands, George W. Ward and Charles Brian Cone. She is survived by her brothers, John "Tip" Quillen and his wife Marion of Ocean City and Paul Quillen of Melborne, Fla., and numerous nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Herman James Wooten, Ernest J. Wooten and George H. Wooten, and sisters Katherine W. Johnson and Zara Shields.

Cone had been the head hostess of Schrafft’s Restaurant in Boston for many years and a homemaker. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Ocean City, Worcester Chapter Order of Eastern Star, and enjoyed gardening and the Garden Club.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, Jan. 6, 2008 at 1 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Ocean City. Rev. Alex Ayers will officiate. Interment will be at a later date in Florida. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund, 1304 Philadelphia Ave., Ocean City, Md. 21842. Arrangements are being handled by the Burbage Funeral Home.

Barbara Pruitt Gill

BERLIN – Barbara Pruitt Gill, age 71, died Sunday, Dec. 16, 2007 at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury. Born in Ocean City, she was the daughter of the late George William Pruitt and Esther Birch Pruitt.

She is survived by her son, Samuel Albert Gill and his wife Terry, and five grandchildren, Gabrielle, Samantha, Zachary, Aiden and Harlow Gill and two nephews. She was preceded in death by her sister, Norma Jean Lokey

She had been employed for many years at Candy Kitchen in Ocean City.

A private burial was held in Evergreen Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Worcester County Humane Society, PO Box 48, Berlin, Md. 21811. Arrangements are by the Burbage Funeral Home in Berlin.

Jessie M. Adams

BERLIN – Jessie M. Adams, 84, died Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2007 at Atlantic General Hospital in Berlin.

Born in Chambersburg, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Roy B. and Jessie Ramsey Tosh. She is survived by her son, Paul R. Adams and his wife Marilyn of Bethany Beach, Del.; sister-in-law, Lorraine Tosh of Fayetteville, Pa.; three grandchildren, Michael T. Adams, John R. Adams and James P. Adams; and three great-grandchildren, Brett, Tara and Jacob Adams. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul H. Adams, in 1996 and a brother, Roy B. Tosh Jr.

Adams completed the cosmetic school requirements and became a beautician and owner in Silver Spring. She was a member of the Atlantic Methodist Church in Ocean City. She was a certified instructor of china and porcelain painting in Ocean City and Edgewater, Fla. In New Jersey at Heath Village, she was active in the quilting club as well as the knitting group and Martha’s circle Bible study group affiliated with Trinity United Methodist Church in Hackettstown.

Services will be private.

Lawrence L. “Pete” Byers

BERLIN – Lawrence L. “Pete” Byers, 71, of The Villages, Fla., died Friday, Dec. 14, 2007.

He was born on July 13, 1936 in Washington, D.C. and raised in Arlington, Va. He was owner and president of Potomac Motors, Inc. He was an U.S. Army Veteran. He loved fishing hunting, tennis and golf. He was loved by many friends. He had a strong faith in Christ, which was evident in his life.

Survivors include his wife, Carol Ann Byers of The Villages, Fla.; sons, Albert Samuel Byers and his wife Julie of Oakton, Va. and Randall Blake Byers and his wife Michelle of Charleston, S.C.; and two grandchildren, Natalie and Samantha.

Funeral services were held in Florida.

Lucile R. Calentine

GUMBORO – Lucille R. Calentine, 81, died Friday, Dec. 14, 2007.

Born in Red House, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Harry E. and Annie E. Luileart Hammack. She is survived by three daughters, Jo Ann Montague of Gumboro, Del., Raggatha Calentine of Selbyville and Sharon McChesney of Brandeburg, Ky.; and a sister Doris Thornton of Bossie City, La. Also survived by 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford E. Calentine, in 1995.

Calentine had worked for Kmart Corp. in the accounting department for many years.

A graveside service will be held today at noon at Roxana Cemetery. Donations may be made to Worcester County Humane Society, P.O. Box 48, Berlin, Md. 21811.
