Amanda Hester Purnell Cherry

BERLIN – Amanda Hester Purnell Cherry, 89, died on Tuesday, March 10, 2009 at Lourdes Medical Center of Burlington County, NJ.

Born in Berlin, she was the daughter of the late Emerson Purnell and Annie Fooks Purnell. She was preceded in death by her husband, Preston Roosevelt Cherry, in 1999.

Cherry worked for many years as a custodian at Stephen Decatur High School. She was a member of St. John’s United Methodist Church in Sinepuxent and previously was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Snow Hill.

She is survived by three sons, Harris Purnell, Sr. (Addie) of Salisbury, Leo Cherry, Sr. (Helen) of Hebron, and Dempster Cherry, Sr.(Girlean) of San Jacinto, Calif.; four daughters, Maria Carter (Donald F., Sr.) of Salisbury, Amanda Mitchell (James, Jr). of Willingboro, NJ, Sally Cherry of Joppatowne, Md. and Sheila Cherry of Easton, Md.; a sister, Violet Rounds (Clarence) of Berlin; sister-in-law, Virginia Purnell of Berlin; 20 grandchildren; 32 great grandchildren; 14 great great grandchildren; a special nephew, Theodore Robert Cherry that she helped to raise from Milbourne, Fla; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services were held. Interment followed in Mt. Zion Cemetery in Snow Hill. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, c/o Gerri Harrison, 337 Winter Quarters Dr., Pocomoke City, Md. 21851 or St. John’s United Methodist Church Building Fund, 8829 Lewis Rd., Berlin, Md. 21811.

Arrangements are being handled by the Burbage Funeral Home in Berlin.

Mildred Antionette Raul

BISHOPVILLE – Mildred Antionette Raul, age 84, died Wednesday, March 11, 2009 at Atlantic General Hospital in Berlin.

Born in Baltimore, she was the daughter of the late Charles M. Taylor, Sr. and Frances Podzimek Taylor. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Raul, Jr.

She is survived by a son, Walter V. Raul, Jr. and his wife Gail of Church Hill, Md.; two daughters, Vincene F. Walsh of Reston, Va. and Charlene Smelter and her husband Walter Smelter, III of Bishopville; five grandchildren, Jamie Raul, Lauren Dufault, Andrew Smelter, Elizabeth K. Smelter and Richard Walsh; and one great grandchild, Max Dufault.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimers Association, 209 C Milford St., Salisbury, Md. 21804. Arrangements are being handled by the Burbage Funeral Home in Berlin.

Stephen Patrick Fell, Sr.

BERLIN – Stephen Patrick Fell, Sr., age 57, died Wednesday, March 11, 2009 at Coastal Hospice at the Lake in Salisbury.

Born in Alexandria, Va. and raised in
Hagerstown, Md., he was the son of the late Nicholas Fell and Frances Keenan Fell.

Fell had worked at Amorosa’s Bakery and with several vending businesses. He had been a bartender at the Pirates Den in Ocean City and had worked with Shore Insurance Company. He was a member of the Salisbury Moose Lodge #654 and was an avid poker player.

He is survived by his wife, Judith Crocker Fell; his children, Stephen Patrick Fell, Jr., Nicki Fell and Colby Fell all of Berlin; his twin sister, Margaret King of Woodstock, Md.; his brother, James Fell of Dundalk, Md.; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert Fell and Nicholas Fell, Jr.

Services were held. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Coastal Hospice at the Lake, PO Box 1733, Salisbury, Md. 21804.

Virginia R. Fenick

MILLSBORO, Del. – Virginia R. Fenick, age 84, of Millsboro, Del., passed away on March 17, 2009 at the Delaware Hospice Center in Milford, Del.

Born June 5, 1924 in Coaldale, Pa. to the late Milton E. Leininger and Elizabeth Leininger, Fenick was the owner and operator of Mother Goose Dairyland in Leighton, Pa for 12 years until she retired in 1986. She and her husband enjoyed traveling throughout the country. When not traveling, she would spend countless hours in her garden. She also was a member of the “Red Hat Society”.

She was preceded in death by her husband Vincent in 2007, and her daughter, Kathleen Fenick in 1968. She is survived by son, John Fenick and a grandson Shane Fenick; one sister Kathryn Kuntz of Middletown, Del.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services will be held on Monday March 23, 2009 at 10 a.m. at Watson Funeral Home, 211 Washington St. Millsboro, Del. where friends may call 1 hour prior. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Delaware Hospice 100 Patriots Way Milford, Del. 19963.
