Berlin Dolphins Win Thriller

BERLIN- The Berlin Dolphins Cadet team won a thriller last week, beating the Salisbury Vikings, 7-0, in a defensive struggle saved by a tackle at the one-yard line as time expired.

The Berlin Cadet Dolphins of the Salvation Army League battled Salisbury all day, holding the Vikings to negative offensive yards for the entire first half that ended in a scoreless tie. Berlin fumbled the opening kick-off of the second half, setting up Salisbury with good field position at the Dolphins’ 35, but again the defense responded and pushed the Vikings back on three sacks by Donnie Haggins, Garrett Rites and Devin Daniels.

Berlin then went on a 10-play, 55-yard drive to the Salisbury one-yard line at the end of the third quarter and punched it in early in the fourth on a keeper by quarterback J.J. Purnell to take a 7-0 lead. With less than a minute to go in the game, Berlin was trying to kill the clock when it turned the ball over giving Salisbury one last chance at their own 11-yard line.

Salisbury completed a Hail Mary pass and the Vikings’ player was streaking down the sideline toward a game-tying touchdown when Berlin’s Tromaine Briddell made the tackle at the one-yard line as time expired to preserve the win.
