New Health Dept. Website

SNOW HILL – Worcester County Health Officer Debbie Goeller has announced that the local health department launched a redesigned, user-friendly website.

The new site has the same address as the former site, www.worcesterhealth.org. It is also available at www.worcesterhealth.info.

“We at the health department are constantly assessing how we can be more accessible to the public. Launching a new website was a top priority,” said Goeller. “We hope our clients, patients and the general public will find the new site easy to use, relevant and informative.”

Conference Announced

SALISBURY – The Breast Diagnostic Center at Peninsula Regional Medical Center joins the American Cancer Society, The Wellness Community-Delmarva and Women Supporting Women in inviting all area women to their sixth annual breast cancer conference.

“A Perspective on Breast Cancer” will be presented on Thursday, Oct. 14 at The Fountains Conference Center in Salisbury. Registration and dinner will begin at 5 p.m. and the program will be held from 6-8 p.m.

Presentations include “Living Your Vision and Purpose Through Breast Cancer” by guest speaker Doretha Burrell, a breast cancer survivor; “Screening Guidelines” by David Walker, MD, Medical Director of the Breast Diagnostic Center at Peninsula Regional Medical Center; and “Breakthroughs in Breast Cancer Care: Made Possible Through Clinical Trials” by Bennett Yu, MD and Sandy Heineken, RN of the Clinical Research Department at Peninsula Regional. The conference will end with a Q& A panel discussion with the audience.

There is no cost to attend this conference and it is open to all women in the community. Space is limited. Women wishing to participate must register in advance by calling Malindie Kirby at 410-543-7006 no later than Oct.7.

Certificate Earned

WILLARDS – The Society of Certified Insurance Counselors (CIC) recently recognized Richard H. Martelo of Atlantic/Smith, Cropper & Deeley with a certificate honoring his 30 years of faithful participation in advanced education.

Making CIC history by being among the first group of CICs to reach this 30-year milestone, Martelo earned the designation through a series of examinations and has maintained his CIC designation by annual attendance at an approved CIC continuing education program.

“The professional dedication and commitment represented by Rick sets the standard within our industry,” said Dr. William T. Hold, CIC, CPCU, CLU, president of the Society of CIC. “This 30-year accomplishment signifies a career of active involvement in advanced education. Rick’s emphasis on professional development positively reflects on the insurance profession as a whole.”

Firm Co-Founder To Retire

SALISBURY – Thomas M. Becker, co-founder and Principal of the architectural and engineering firm Becker Morgan Group, Inc. announced his plans to retire from the day-to-day activities of the firm on Jan. 1, 2011 after practicing architecture for over 45 years.

Becker will serve as a consultant to the company, expanding the firm’s on-going business development efforts throughout the Mid-Atlantic region.

“It has been a wonderful experience helping to create a talented and successful firm,” said Becker. “We have had the good fortune to attract great clients, consultants, staff and fellow partners who have allowed me the opportunity to participate in the planning of many meaningful facilities. I will miss the daily excitement and challenges of helping clients’ envision and develop their projects, but I look forward to my continued involvement with the firm in this new capacity while enjoying additional time with my family and friends.”

W. Ronald Morgan, principal and founding partner with Becker, will remain as company president. The firm’s other Principals, Ernest W. Olds, Gregory V. Moore and Brad A. Hastings will also continue their corporate and individual project management roles. Becker Morgan Group has built its foundation on providing clients with responsive service and quality designs, and will continue operating under these principles.

In 1983, Becker and Morgan established the firm as an architectural planning and design company in Salisbury. In 1993, the firm opened a second office in Dover and supplemented the firm’s architectural, land planning and interior design services with civil engineering and surveying services. In the firm’s 27 years, it has grown to over 120 employees.

Currently, the firm has offices in Salisbury, Dover and Wilmington, N.C.

Volk recently became a realtor and brings with him 35 years of marketing experience in the retail field. In addition to real estate, he is also a Home Stager and is a member of RESA (Real Estate Staging Association).

New OC App Launched

OCEAN CITY – The Ocean City Department of Tourism has announced the availability of the Android version of the town’s official Smartphone application.

Identical to “Ocean City Mobile,” the iPhone application launched in June, the Android version of the Ocean City application is free and now available through the Android Market.

The Android application provides users with direct information on Ocean City restaurants, accommodations, entertainment, events, services, deals and promotions, maps, weather forecasts and more. “The response to the iPhone version of Ocean City Mobile was so positive that we worked quickly and efficiently to ensure that more of our visitors can take advantage of the features and functionality of the application,” said Ocean City Mayor Rick Meehan. “The release of the Andriod application is timely for Labor Day and fall travel planning. It also allows users to stay connected to Ocean City year-round.”

The official applications of Ocean City for Android and iPhone were created by MGH, Inc., a full-service marketing agency located in Owings Mills, Md., which plans and executes Ocean City’s advertising, social media, public relations and interactive media campaigns.

School Earns Distinction

SALISBURY – For the second consecutive year, Salisbury University has been named a Military Friendly School by G.I. Jobs magazine. Honored among the top 15 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools nationwide, SU will be included in 2011 Guide to Military Friendly Schools, published in September.

The guide is designed to help students who are enlisted or who are veterans determine what schools will welcome them and provide the greatest value. There are currently some eight million troops and veterans eligible for G.I. Bill benefits.

 Some 100 SU students have military experience — a number that has more than doubled since spring 2009. One of those students is senior Sarah Dennis, an international studies major who served four years in the U.S. Air Force. She credits recent graduate and Iraq War veteran Joe Hoover, who has been the Veterans Affairs liaison in the Registrar’s Office, with helping her make a smooth transition.

“The office plays an instrumental role to ensure that veterans receive the benefits they have worked so hard for and truly deserve,” said Dennis, who will take over as liaison in fall 2010. “I’ve been helped with issues including qualifying for the Post 9/11 G.I. Bill, using my educational benefits to study abroad and receiving an advanced book stipend.”
