Worcester Girls Advance in Tourney

BERLIN- After struggling somewhat down the stretch in recent games, Worcester Prep’s girls’ varsity soccer had a big day when it mattered most, thrashing visiting Salisbury Christian, 7-0, at home on Wednesday in the semifinals of the ESIAC tournament.

After winning their first six games of the season, the Mallards hit the wall somewhat toward the end of the regular season, dropping four of its list seven games. On Wednesday, however, they left nothing to chance, jumping all over visiting Salisbury Christian. The Mallards led 4-0 at the half on two goals by Lillian DiNardo and one goal each by Maddy DiNardo and Katelin Talbert.

Nearly half of the second period expired before Lillian DiNardo scored her third goal of the game at the 21:58 mark in the second half to extend the lead to 5-0. It remained 5-0 for much of the rest of the game until Meredith Soule got past the Salisbury Christian keeper with just under four minutes remaining to score an empty net goal to make it 6-0. Soule added another with under a minute remaining on an unsettled situation in front of the net to make it 7-0. The Mallards will host the ESIAC championship game this afternoon.
