Decatur Wrestlers Finish 1st Half Strong

BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s varsity wrestling team wrapped up the first segment of its 2010-2011 campaign on a high note last week, beating Patuxent and Wicomico in a dual meet to finish with a perfect 6-0 mark going into the holiday break.

The Seahawks dominated the early part of the season, jumping out to a 6-0 record including a perfect 3-0 mark in the Bayside Conference. Decatur also had a strong showing in its own War on the Shore tournament in early December, finishing 15th out of the field of 27 of the top high school wrestling programs throughout the mid-Atlantic region.

Last week, the Seahawks rounded out the first part of the season with a pair of resounding wins, beating Patuxent, 58-18, and Wicomico, 52-21, in a dual meet featuring the three schools. In the match against Wicomico, Decatur started slow, losing four of the first five matches before turning it on. The Seahawks then won seven individual matches in a row and eight of the last nine to bury the Indians.

The season will heat up after the holiday break as the Seahawks get into the meat of their schedule. Decatur faces always tough Bennett on the road next Wednesday, followed by another tough match against Reservoir next Saturday, January 8. The Seahawks lost to Reservoir in the state regional championship last year by a mere two points.

After a fast start, the Seahawks will hope to build on the early momentum as they prepare for the second half of the season. Decatur has won seven straight Bayside Conference and District VIII championships and has become a force across the Eastern Shore and the entire state in recent years.
