Seahawks Clipped by Bennett, 51-43

BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s boys’ varsity basketball team could not overcome periods of sloppy play and a couple of big runs by host Bennett on Tuesday, falling to the Clippers, 51-43, after trailing by two with just over a minute remaining.

The Seahawks jumped out to an early 10-4 lead, but the Clippers found their groove and went on an 8-2 run midway through the first quarter to take the lead. During the run, Decatur turned the ball over several times setting up easy scoring opportunities down the other end for Bennett. It was a trend that would plague the Seahawks all night.

Despite the shaky play, Decatur trailed only by five points at 25-20 at the intermission and quickly cut into the lead early in the third quarter. With just over two minutes gone in the third, the Seahawks had cut the lead to just one point at 27-26, but Bennett turned up the pressure and went on a 10-3 run of its own to lead 37-30 at the end of three quarters.

Decatur scratched and clawed its way back into the game through much of the fourth quarter. Led by an offensive surge by Tre Foreman, the Seahawks closed to within two points at 45-43 with just over a minute left in the game. That was as close as Decatur would get, however, as the Clippers scored the last six points of the game to secure the 51-43 win over their Bayside South rivals.
