Greene Turtle West 5K a Big Success

WEST OCEAN CITY- The 7th Annual Greene Turtle West 5K Run and Walk, held last Sunday for the benefit of the Ocean City Emergency Medical Technicians, was once again a big success with over 150 racers competing.

For the seventh straight year, the Greene Turtle West, along with partner Races2Run, hosted the annual 5K for the benefit of the Ocean City EMTs. From modest beginnings seven years ago, the annual event has grown by leaps and bounds. This year, 153 competitors from all over the country participated in the annual event last Sunday.

The course began at the entrance to the Greene Turtle and headed south on Route 611 before making a loop through the Mystic Harbor community and returning to the finish line in front of the popular restaurant and bar. A post-race party immediately followed the event with food and refreshments, music, door prizes and awards presentations.

For the record, Evan Thomas of Salisbury was the first across the finish line, coming in at 18:57. Bryan Sperry of Littleton, Colorado was second, finishing in 19:18, while Chris Klebe of Bishopville was third, finishing in 19:32.

Local competitors finishing in the Top 50 included Klebe (3); Barry Mariner, Berlin, (15); Mark Ondo, Salisbury (16); Brian McKelvey, Berlin, (21); Albert Zimbro, Ocean City, (24); Mark Latorest, Berlin, (29); Walter Andrews, Ocean City, (31); Fred Thomas, Salisbury, (34); Zackery Tyndall, Berlin (44); and Laurel Harrington, Berlin (45).
