FENWICK — For the first time in several years, all major routes to the resort areas through Delaware, including the controversial Route 54, will be free of construction heading into Memorial Day weekend.
According to officials from the Department of Transportation (DelDOT), motorists will have a much easier time accessing the resort areas in Delaware this season. There will be no lane closures, or major construction on any of the major beach routes in Sussex County.
Major work on the vital east-west connection to Fenwick Island via Route 54 is complete, with all lanes open to traffic. In addition, earlier this week, all four lanes on the new Indian River Inlet Bridge opened to traffic, ending a multi-year project that involved numerous lane closures, and shifting traffic patterns. The pedestrian walkway is to open today.
“The roads to Delaware’s beaches are wide open, and our state is ready to welcome visitors from across the country this Memorial Day weekend,” said DelDOT Secretary Shailen Bhatt. “All we ask is that our visitors help us keep our roads safe by refraining from distracted driving and by wearing their seatbelts as they enjoy their vacations.”
