Kail Wins State Regional Title

BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s varsity wrestling team was outstanding last weekend at the state regional tournament, with Ryan Kail winning a regional championship and several other Seahawks placing high in their respective weight categories.

Seven Decatur wrestlers competed in the state 4A-3A East regional meet last weekend. The Seahawks collected one first-place finish along with two seconds and a third to end up with 78 total team points, good enough for fourth place among the 24 schools represented. River Hill was first with 145.5, followed by South River and then Wilde Lake.

In the 285-pound class, Decatur’s Ryan Kail beat Pat Reid of Chesapeake in the first round and knocked off River Hill’s Justin Nestor in the second round to reach the championship bout. Kail then beat Landon Reecher in the title bout to win the championship at 285.

At 113, Nate Rosenblatt beat North County’s Bobby Juliano in the first round and then took out Noah Polonsky in the second round to reach the finals. Rosenblatt fell to Taariq Mohammed of River Hill in the title match to take second place in the weight class.

At 160, Decatur’s Andrew Borradaile beat Branden Norris of South River in the opener, then beat Lalito Trevino of Old Mill in the second round to reach the finals. Borradaile fell to Hammond’s Bryan Overton in the championship bout and earned a second-place finish.

At 195, Adam Bargar of Decatur dropped his first match, but swept two matches in the consolation round to reach the third-place bout. Bargar beat Bel Air’s Cyle Crawford to take third place in the weight class. At 145, Decatur’s Alex Schiffer lost his first match, won his second and then beat Justin Goodwin of Arundel to take fifth place. Also competing for Decatur were T.J. Scafone at 106 and Kaelen Patterson at 152.

With their strong finishes, four Decatur wrestlers advanced to the state championship meet this weekend. Kail will face Rayem Ali of Springbrook in his opening round match. Borradaile will face Clyde McBride of Charles H. Flowers in his opener, while Rosenblatt will face Dominick Summers of North Point in the first round at 113. Bargar also advanced and will face Brock Turnbaugh of Hereford in his opening round match at 195.
