BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s varsity wrestling team did well in its own War on the Shore tournament last weekend, finishing ninth overall while placing several individual wrestlers in their respective weight classes.

The top individual placer for Decatur was Andy McKahan at 145, who finished second overall. McKahan beat Sam Casalvera of Middletown in his opener, beat Ethan Stern of Mount St. Joseph’s in the second round and Tony Sita of Huntingtown in the third round to reach the finals. However, McKahan fell to Ryan Lawrence of Damascus in the title bout at 145 to finish second.

At 113, Decatur’s Robert Kaminski finished third overall after going 4-1 during a series of matches in which he received a cut over his eye that required six stitches. Kaminski beat Charles Crossfield of Archbishop Ryan in his opener, beat Jackson Kramer of Huntingtown in his second bout and then lost to Seth Hoopes of Octarara in the third round. Kaminski then battled back to beat Kevin Bowne of Caesar Rodney and Alex Figueras of St. Mary’s Ryken to finish third in his weight class.

At 220, Decatur’s Jian Joobeen beat Brendan Holder of Caesar Rodney in his opener and Dominic Hovington of Milford in his second-rounder before falling to Brady Daniel of Good Counsel in his third bout. Joobeen then beat Nansemond River’s Tommy Cervantes to reach the third-place bout before losing to Johnny Morris of Sussex Central to finish fourth.

At 195, Decatur’s Caleb Bourne beat Isaiah Washington of Caesar Rodney in his opener and beat Michael Wright of Sussex Central in his second bout. Bourne then fell to Austin Stith of Mount St. Joseph’s, but battled back to beat Elijah Baisden of Damascus to finish fifth overall in the weight division.

At 285, Decatur’s Ean Spencer beat Sajed Abdelmomin of Damascus in his opener, but fell to Paul Warner of Mount St. Joseph. Spencer beat Ken Tiemon of Caesar Rodney, Mario Santizo of Sussex Central, Jalen Lea of Good Counsel and Jase Crouse of Freedom to take fifth place. At 120, Decatur’s Josh Lawson went 3-2 overall and battled back to beat Alex Kephart of Huntingtown to finish seventh in the division. At 126, Decatur’s Jeremy Danner also went 3-2 in five matches to finish seventh overall.
